Homelessness Awareness Week 2006!
CONGRATULATIONS! Homelessness Awareness Week 2005 was a big success...now on to 2006!
This year, Washington University students are organizing an awe-inspiring week for Homelessness Awareness Week 2006. The goal during the week of November 12, 2006, is to raise awareness to the Washington University and St. Louis communities about the prevalent yet neglected issue of homelessness both nation-wide and in the St. Louis area.
An alliance of student groups on campus, all of which deal with an aspect of either homelessness or poverty, have come together in making this week a success. The groups include: Social Justice Center, Helping Hands (Campus Y), Alliance of Students Against Poverty (ASAP), Habitat for Humanity, SAE (fraternity), Feed St. Louis, WUTV, and Stone Soup. Each of these groups are committed to their cause and actively represent all that homelessness awareness encompasses in their local communities.
The goal for the week is to promote awareness to the Wash U community about the reality outside main campus and to initiate and reciprocate any social changes in homelessness in St. Louis and nation-wide. We fully appreciate everyone's support in making Homelessness Awareness Week a possibility and a success.
The scheduled events for Homelessness Awareness Week include:
Monday: Visual Awareness
Students will be situated in various locations on campus with information and statistics of homelessness. Passing students and staff can come face to face with what most do not acknowledge.
Tuesday: Movie Night
Time: 8:30 pm
Location: Ursa's
Activity: we will be showing an episode of Law & Order that deals with homelessness. Food will be provided, as well as an after-movie discussion.
Wednesday: Speaker Panel
Time: 8:00pm
Location: Wheeler Great Room
Speakers include Gay Lorberbaum of the architecture school, a representative for Habitat for Humanity's St. Louis Branch, and individuals who have previously been homeless. The discussion panelists represent a variety of disciplines and have all worked with minimizing the St. Louis homeless population in fantastically diverse ways.
Thursday: Symbolism
This day, along with Monday, will raise visual awareness on campus as the Wash U community learns the shocking truth of homelessness and the staggering numbers of homeless individuals in St. Louis
Friday: Service Project
Time: 2:30
Location: Clocktower on the South 40, then onwards to Gateway Homeless Services.
Students will work to help create a child-friendly space in the basement of the shelter. Gateway Homeless Services is a family-based shelter that has a true necessity for a playroom for children. Transportation will be provided, please bring your metrolink card and your student ID.
Saturday: Hunger Banquet
Time: 6.30pm
Location: Mudd Multipurpose Room
Students will witness firsthand how the homeless live and survive compared to the cushioned lives of the middle and upper classes. The price for plate is yet to be determined, but it will definitely be less than 5 dollars per plate of catered food.
Throughout the week these organizations will be tabling at Mallinckrodt to advertise these events and raise Homelessness Awareness on campus. Additionally, WUTV will be airing a student-created documentary on the Wash U channel throughout the week. Students can also watch the documentary at the Homelessness Awareness Week table in Mallinckrodt.
T-shirts are available for 8 dollars a piece and can be purchased at the Homelessness Awareness Week Table in Mallinckrodt from 11-1 Monday November 13th through Friday November 18th.
